Trump Postpones Meeting with Putin, Ukraine War Solution Unclear
On Tuesday, October 21, 2025, US President Donald Trump announced that he would not be meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin anytime soon. This decision came after Trump had previously said he would meet with Putin soon in Hungary. Trump emphasized that he did not want to have a "pointless" meeting and was still waiting for further developments regarding the Ukraine conflict.
This postponement indicates that Trump's efforts to reach a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia remain far from being achieved. Despite Trump's efforts to reach an agreement between the two countries, both in talks with Putin and in meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the parties involved are still far from an agreement. In a statement, Trump emphasized that he wants to see significant changes on the battlefield before resuming further talks.
Meanwhile, Russia rejected Trump's call to halt fighting on the Ukrainian front. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that a ceasefire without a clear agreement would only exacerbate the situation and lead to ignoring the root causes, including Ukraine's refusal to join NATO. Lavrov also emphasized that Russia wants more than just a ceasefire—it wants Ukraine to cede territory and ensure its non-NATO status.
Meanwhile, European countries, including the UK, France, and Germany, supported Trump's call for a temporary ceasefire, although they downplayed Russia's intention to truly end the war. European leaders believe Russia prefers violence to a genuine peace, further fueling global tensions.
With the situation still unclear, Trump is now focusing on other strategies to resolve the conflict, even as relations continue to fluctuate. Meanwhile, Russia continues to demand that Ukraine cede territory in the Donbass, hoping to further increase pressure on Kyiv. It remains to be seen whether Trump can push for a more concrete solution or face a longer stalemate. (asd)
