Trump Shows Off Gaza Peace Accomplishment, Tougher Challenges Await
US President Donald Trump basked in the global spotlight after signing the Gaza peace agreement in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. The agreement, dubbed "3,000 years in the making," marked the end of the fighting between Israel and Hamas and was a major communications victory for Trump.
In his campaign-style speech, Trump thanked the world leaders in attendance and made some pointed jokes about his opponents, including former President Joe Biden. "We've accomplished something incredible," he said, drawing applause from the more than 20 heads of state and international organizations in attendance.
While this was considered a major success, many warned that the next steps would be much more difficult. Trump must ensure the implementation of his 20-point peace plan for Gaza, including the disarmament of Hamas, which remains unclear.
Trump also intends to expand the Abraham Accords and even suggested that peace with Iran would be "easy to achieve" — a statement that has drawn skepticism.
Despite the euphoria, Trump still faces other significant challenges. This weekend, he is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at the White House to discuss efforts to end the Ukraine-Russia war.
"True peace isn't just declarations and group photos," said Brian Katulis of the Middle East Institute. "It requires concrete action and sustained commitment." (asd)
