Tariffs Delayed Again? What's Behind the US-China Negotiations?
The US and China are expected to extend their tariff truce by 90 days, according to a South China Morning Post report on Sunday, citing sources close to the negotiations. Talks resumed Monday in Stockholm, just weeks before the current truce expires on August 12.
This third round of negotiations will focus on unresolved issues, such as US concerns over China’s industrial overcapacity, rather than seeking a quick breakthrough. Sources said that neither side plans to impose new tariffs or escalate the conflict during the extended period.
China is also expected to seek clarity on a 20% US tariff imposed in March over fentanyl concerns. President Donald Trump said Sunday that the US is "very close" to reaching a deal with China but did not provide further details.
Meanwhile, the Financial Times reported that the US has temporarily paused technology export restrictions on China to avoid disrupting the talks. Markets welcomed the news, viewing it as a positive step toward de-escalating trade tensions and reviving progress on a broader deal.(ayu)
