Israel and Lebanon Agree to 10-Day Ceasefire, Trump Says
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the leaders of Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire after officials from both countries met in Washington. The temporary truce will begin at 5 p.m. ET, Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
In a follow-up post, Trump said he will invite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun to the White House for what he called the first “meaningful talks” between Israel and Lebanon since 1983. He said both sides want peace and expressed confidence progress could come quickly.
The announcement adds to broader expectations of a diplomatic off-ramp in the Middle East conflict that, according to the source narrative, began when the U.S. and Israel launched operations against Iran on Feb. 28. Israel’s heavy strikes on Lebanon last week prompted Iranian accusations that its own fragile two-week ceasefire had already been violated.
While U.S.–Iran peace negotiations ended over the weekend without a deal, Trump has said this week the war is “very close to over,” and the White House has voiced optimism about “the prospects of a deal.” Trump said he had just completed “excellent conversations” with Netanyahu and Aoun and described the ceasefire as being reached to achieve peace between the two countries.
Trump added that Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine will work with Israel and Lebanon to pursue what he described as a lasting peace.
