Trump Forms “Peace Council” in Davos, World Grows Suspicious
Donald Trump officially launched a new organization called the “Board of Peace” in Davos. He said the body would work closely with the UN, but many world leaders remain skeptical about whether it is truly a partnership or an attempt to create a new path that could “replace” the UN’s role. Trump even said that once the board is complete, they can do almost anything they want—a statement that immediately raised major questions about the direction of the global order.
The launch featured 19 world leaders, but only two European Union countries appeared to participate—Hungary and Bulgaria. The absence of many European countries underscores two things: Trump’s ambition to “reshape” the world order, but also the limits of support for that idea. The situation is further complicated by his administration’s recent withdrawal from dozens of international organizations affiliated with the UN, leading some countries to view the project as “Washington’s version of international cooperation.”
Some countries were quick to respond to the invitation, but many others chose to hold back, wanting to learn more. Some even declined, and Trump responded with a harsh tone, including threats of significant tariffs. On the other hand, the Trump team emphasized that the council would focus not only on "peace," but also on "action," with its scope extending to major conflicts like Ukraine-Russia and the Greenland issue—precisely this aspect that has raised concerns among some countries.
The controversy deepened as invitations were also sent to rival parties, including Russia and Ukraine, while the Gaza issue remains a sensitive issue. There was also the issue of the cost of the "permanent seat," which was said to be substantial, although US officials stated that contributions were voluntary. In essence, the "Board of Peace" has become Trump's new platform at Davos—but before it can be trusted as a peace engine, the world wants answers: is this global cooperation, or a new tool to govern the world by new rules?
