Trump: "We Must Have Greenland"
US President Donald Trump has again raised the issue of Greenland and reiterated his ambition to take over the island. In a statement in Florida on Monday night, Trump even claimed the European Union would not resist too strongly if the US continued to push the plan.
Trump called Greenland a national security necessity, arguing that the island is crucial for containing Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic region. He also believed Denmark lacked adequate defense capabilities to protect the region.
"We must have it. It must be done," Trump told reporters, referring to Greenland. This statement escalated political tensions that had already fueled market concerns about an escalation in US relations with Europe.
Trump also briefly linked Greenland to the Nobel Peace Prize. In a letter he sent to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Trump expressed his disapproval of the Nobel Prize and linked that narrative to his claim to Greenland.
Meanwhile, ahead of his trip to Davos, Trump praised the US economic performance. He called the US economy the "hottest" in the world, highlighting record-breaking investment and a soaring stock market, during an appearance alongside Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.
