U.S. Forces Reportedly Strike Multiple Targets in Venezuela
Strikes on multiple targets in Venezuela, including a military base, port, and airport near Caracas, took place early Saturday morning, according to media reports and eyewitness accounts on X. It is believed that the attacks were carried out by U.S. forces.
Residents of Caracas reported hearing loud explosions and aircraft sounds beginning around 1:50 a.m. local time. The southern area of the Venezuelan capital, near a major military base, lost electricity following the strikes.
CNN also reported on multiple strikes on the capital, with their crew witnessing several explosions. Military helicopters believed to belong to US forces were reportedly seen flying over Caracas.
Venezuelan news outlets Efecto Cocuyo and Tal Cual Digital reported that explosions were also heard in La Guaira state north of Caracas and along the country’s coast, as well as in Higuerote, a coastal city in Miranda state.
Some reports indicated strikes targeted an air base in Caracas and a Venezuelan naval base in Vargas state. Unconfirmed information also mentioned an explosion at an oil refinery in the capital.
The Venezuelan government issued a statement rejecting what it described as "military aggression" by the United States. Venezuelan authorities claim the goal of the purported U.S. attack is to "take possession of Venezuelan oil and minerals." The United States "will not succeed," the statement said, adding that the government called on "all social and political forces to activate mobilization plans."
CBS reported that Trump administration officials are aware of the reports of explosions and aircraft over Caracas.
President Trump has not yet made an official comment on the military action. He had previously threatened to strike Venezuela if President Nicolas Maduro did not resign, and had warned that the US was preparing action against alleged drug trafficking networks in Venezuela, stating that strikes on land would begin "soon."
Colombian President Gustavo Petro posted on X that Venezuela’s capital Caracas is currently under missile attack. "At this moment they are bombing Caracas. Alert to the whole world they have attacked Venezuela," Petro wrote on X. He added that missiles were being used in the attack and called for immediate meetings of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations (UN).
