Trump Claims US Attacks Drug Docks in Venezuela
President Donald Trump confirmed that the US had attacked facilities in Venezuela, marking a major escalation in his administration's campaign against alleged drug trafficking operations there. "There was a major explosion at the dock area where the ships were loading drugs," Trump told reporters on Monday, confirming comments he made last week. This attack would be the first time the US has announced a ground attack in Venezuela.
The attack is part of increasing pressure on the government of Nicolas Maduro, which has previously been hit with attacks on ships in the region and a blockade aimed at disrupting Venezuelan oil exports. In addition to the ground attack, the US also launched another attack on a drug ship in international waters on Monday, which was destroyed in a massive explosion, with two suspected drug traffickers killed.
Trump revealed that he had spoken with Maduro recently, but he called the conversation unproductive. The Venezuelan government has not commented on the attacks in their country, although they have often responded forcefully to US interventions in the Caribbean in recent months.
Additionally, CNN reported that earlier this month, the CIA carried out a drone strike on a dock on the Venezuelan coast, which US authorities believe was linked to the Tren de Aragua gang, although there were no casualties. The Pentagon later sought confirmation of the dock attack from the White House, but no further comment was received.
Trump also revealed in a radio interview that the US had attacked a major facility ahead of Christmas, destroying one of the main departure points for drug boats. This statement indicates Trump's intention to expand the military campaign with further ground attacks against drug trafficking targets in Venezuela. (asd)
