Kim Jong Un Oversees New Anti-Air Missile Test, KCNA Says
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un presided over the test of a new long-range, high-altitude missile and inspected the progress of a nuclear submarine under construction. The missile test successfully hit a mock target at an altitude of 200 kilometers on Wednesday, according to North Korean state media. This action escalated tensions after the US nuclear submarine, the USS Greeneville, arrived at the port of Busan, South Korea, on Tuesday.
In response to the arrival of the US nuclear submarine, North Korea threatened to take countermeasures befitting a "demonstration of US nuclear force." Kim also visited a shipyard to inspect the progress of the construction of an 8,700-ton nuclear submarine, reportedly part of efforts to strengthen North Korea's defense capabilities.
This action comes after South Korea and the US agreed to resume talks on a treaty that would allow South Korea to build nuclear submarines. Wi Sung-lac, South Korea's National Security adviser, said that technical talks would begin early next year.
North Korea has threatened South Korea's plan, calling it an "offensive act" that would undermine regional instability and threaten North Korea's security and maritime security. (asd)
