UK Unemployment Remains High, Jobs Decline
The UK unemployment rate remained at 5.1% in the three months to November 2025, the same as the previous period and slightly above market expectations of 5.0%. This is the highest level since the three months to March 2021, driven by increases in both short-term and long-term unemployment.
The total number of unemployed rose by 158,000 to 1.832 million, while total employment fell by 16,000 to 34.226 million, marking the second consecutive quarterly decline. The decline in employment was primarily in full-time positions, although second jobs increased slightly to 1.302 million, or 3.8% of total employment.
The employment rate fell by 0.3 percentage points to 74.9%, while the activity level remained stable at 79.0%. This indicates a slowdown in the UK labor market, which could impact economic growth and future government policy decisions. (az)
