UK Retail Sales Fall Again, What's Happening?
UK retail sales fell slightly by 0.1% (month-on-month) in November 2025, against market expectations of a 0.4% rise, following a 0.9% decline in October (revised lower). This marked the second consecutive month of decline, primarily driven by weakening non-store/online retail sales, with online jewelry stores reporting weaker demand as precious metal prices remained stable. Supermarket sales also fell for the fourth consecutive month, reflecting continued sluggish foot traffic.
However, downward pressure was partially offset by a 1.0% increase in non-food stores. Department stores were helped by extended Black Friday sales, while footwear and leather goods retailers also recorded increased sales. Automotive fuel sales also recovered from the previous month's decline, returning slightly above the September 2025 level. Annually, retail sales grew 0.6% (year-on-year)—the same as the previous month, but still below market expectations of 0.9%. (az)
